Government to Amazon: Need to ensure ‘country of origin’ label

BENGALURU: An appellate authority under the consumer affairs ministry has rejected Amazon India’s application to review the fine imposed on it for not displaying ‘country of origin’ details on products on its marketplace.
Amazon’s plea to the appellate authority under the department of Legal Metrology said it had de-listed the seller violating ‘country of origin’ guidelines within 36 hours of receiving the notice. Amazon said it is only a marketplace connecting customers and sellers and the responsibility for compliance lies with the seller.
The order passed on February 2 noted that an e-commerce entity has to ensure that the mandatory declarations are shown regarding the products being sold on the platform. Amazon India has over 6.5 lakh sellers here and it had issued a guideline to sellers last year saying they should update their listings with `country of origin’ details.
