Timeline: Amazon’s India journey under Jeff Bezos

Bengaluru: In a surprise move, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos stepped down as the chief executive of the e-commerce giant on Tuesday, to focus on his other initiatives, such as Blue Origin, The Washington Post, Day 1 Fund, and the Bezos Earth Fund. Andy Jassy, who heads the company’s cloud computing unit Amazon Web Services (AWS), is expected to take over this role in the third quarter of 2021.

Amazon has doubled down on the India market in recent years, after losing the e-commerce battle in China to local rivals. The online retail giant has committed investments worth $6.5 billion in the country to date. Over the years, the company has also expanded its offerings in the country beyond e-commerce to foray into sectors like digital payments, music streaming, grocery delivery, video streaming, and education among others.
