FCC says no to inflight voice calls
The next big thing for telecom operators is to facilitate regular phone calls while you are flying 35,000 feet up in the cloud traveling from one continent to another. In September 2020, Reliance Jio announced inflight data plans in partnership with 22 airlines but made it categorically clear that incoming calls are not allowed on these packs and the data pack is only for inflight communications.
It’s not that the technology is not there to allow regular phone calls. Also, there is not much to worry about whether or not phone calls will create “interference issues” with cockpit devices. The biggest reason to not allow phone calls while flying is simple: it’s the passengers.
The Federal Communications Commission has voted against a proposal to allow inflight voice calls recently, as per a report by Bloomberg.
