Govt may defer levying import duty on display assembly for a year
New Delhi: The government is considering deferring the levy of import duty on display assembly till October 2021, a move when approved will provide a major relief to mobile phone makers.
Official sources say the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) is believed to have proposed the deferral and the matter is now with the department of revenue (DoR) in the finance ministry.
According to the fourth phase of manufacturing plan 2017, 10% basic customs duty on display assembly, touch panel, cover glass assembly and vibrator motor/ringer was scheduled to be imposed from April 1, 2020. Except for vibrator motor/ringer, the other three schedules were postponed for October 2020, which is now likely to be extended further by a year.
