What Google’s latest data reveals about coronavirus in India
NEW DELHI: Internet users in India have drastically lost interest around coronavirus over the past 90 days if data from Google Trends is to be believed. Surprisingly, there is not much significant interest among internet users in India to know about the coronavirus vaccine either. This is despite the steady rise in coronavirus cases in India. As of August 19, India reported 2,836,925 confirmed cases with 53,866 deaths, 686,395 active cases and 2,096,664 recovered cases.
As per Google Trends, people searched the most about COVID-19 and coronavirus between March 22 and 28 and the interest levels had peaked then. There was a sharp decline in the interest levels of people to search news or other information around coronavirus by the end of April. By mid-June, coronavirus was no longer an interesting topic as the popularity score dropped by more than 75% and the Google Trends graph went below the score of 25.
For those unaware, Google Trends rates the popularity of a search topic on a scale of 0 to 100. “Numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means there was not enough data for this term,” explains Google.
