Trai paper seeks listing of actual broadband speeds
NEW DELHI: At a time when corona-hit businesses are running through work-from-home (WFH) mode and internet has become the backbone of the economy, education and other key activities, the government is concerned over slow internet speed in India.
Perturbed over the slow speed in both home broadband and mobile broadband, telecom regulator Trai now wants to find out how the speed can be taken up to the level of 50Mbps per subscriber, which has also been desired in the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) of 2018.
In a consultation paper ‘Roadmap to promote broadband connectivity and enhanced broadband speed’, Trai said speed is the “single most important metric of interest” in characterising the “quality” of broadband service. “To promote openness and transparency in communications to consumers, it may be beneficial to measure actual speed and make available the test results statistics to users. It may encourage healthy competition amongst service providers on the basis of broadband performance.”
