Instagram is illegally collecting biometric data, claims new lawsuit
Facebook-owned Instagram is facing another lawsuit that claims that it is illegally collecting biometric data from its photo-tagging feature. As per a report by Bloomberg, Facebook is “accused of collecting, storing and profiting from the biometric data of more than 100 million Instagram users, without their knowledge or consent.”
Just last month Facebook faced a similar lawsuit and “offered to pay” $650 million settlement. The new lawsuit claimed that Facebook has harvested data of over “100 million Instagram users”. As per the Illinois privacy law, Facebook may be forced to pay “$1,000 per violation — or $5,000 if it’s found to have acted recklessly or intentionally,” it added.
The lawsuit mentions that Facebook reportedly did not ask for user permission to collect biometric data and has been collecting since the start of 2020.
