Amazon may launch a hand recognition payment system

Biometrics are quite the norm in various walks of life where technology is involved. Fingerprint sensors, facial recognition systems are commonly used across the world. However, it looks like Amazon may come up with a novel form of biometrics for users to complete their purchases. According to a report by The New York Post, “the e-tailing giant’s engineers are quietly testing scanners that can identify an individual human hand as a way to ring up a store purchases”. The system is expected to be launched in Amazon-owned supermarket chain, Whole Foods.
A report by Engadget further explains how the system works. Amazon is using “computer vision and depth geometry to identify the size and shape of your hand before charging the credit card you have on file”. In other words, no fingerprint or face scan but just a consumer’s hand scan will lead to a purchase being made.
