NEW DELHI: Every once in a while comes a product that shakes and stirs the market like no one else has. This product not only changes the rules of the game but also has competition running helter skelter in search of ideas to counter the threat. We are talking about not just one but two such products: the Apple Watch and Apple AirPods. Look at the numbers these two products generate and how they dominate the entire category.
Let’s start with the Apple AirPods first. While the market for wireless earbuds was there, it was the launch of the AirPods two years back that really made it take off. Since then every brand worth its salt has had an offering in the space. Be it Samsung with Galaxy Buds, Bose with its SoundSport or Jabra with a couple of options. As per a research by Counterpoint, the market for wireless ‘hearables’ – also known as truly wireless earphones – stood at 12.5 million units in Q4 2018. Out of this number, Apple grabbed a whopping 60% share and remains a market leader by a fair distance. The second spot was occupied by Jabra followed by Samsung, JLab and Bose. Such is Apple’s dominance that the four brands combined do not outsell the AirPods.
