On March 20, 2017 Vodafone Group Plc and Idea Cellular announced that they have reached an agreement to combine their operations in India (excluding Vodafone’s 42 pc stake in Indus Towers) to create India’s largest telecom operator. The combined company would become the leading communications provider in India with almost 400 million customers, 35 pc customer market share and 41 pc revenue market share. The combined entity would be treated as Significant Market Power (SMP) as per Trai’s definition as it would cross the threshold of 30 pc market share and way ahead of all other entities in the telecom operations in India.
