Lower portability fee may help telcos

NEW DELHI: A revised fee of Rs 5.74 will be charged for every mobile number portability (MNP) transaction from September 30, the telecom regulator said, a development which may help telecom operators save up to Rs 75 crore annually as the new fee will be nearly 70% less than Rs 19 charged at present.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has reduced the per port transaction charge (PPTC), which is paid by a telco to MNP service providers such as Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions for every new customer it acquires through MNP.
