Bigger scope for chip assembly, testing in India than fabrication: Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron Technology
Micron, the world’s fourth largest semiconductor company, could evaluate setting up a semiconductor assembly and test facility in India rather than an expensive fabrication unit, provided it gets the right incentives on a sustained long-term basis. While manufacturing is necessary, the country should not lose its focus as a design and innovation hub for semiconductor companies and leverage on its strength and grow it, the US-based company’s chief executive, Sanjay Mehrotra, told ET.
“In terms of assembly and test opportunities in India, there are perhaps greater opportunities on that front, rather than the fab side. We have a diversified footprint in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan & China, with respect to our assembly and test proficiencies. But that is an area we of course, continue to evaluate opportunities (in India) for the future,” the India-born executive said.
