With 38 hackings per second, India second only to US

With close to 1.38 lakh account take over (ATO) logins per hour in 2018 — a form of identity theft using bots — India was second only to the US as the most preferred country for such cyber attacks, according to Akamai’s 2018 ‘Credential Stuffing: Attacks and Economies’ report. A Credential Stuffing ATO occurs when stolen login and password combination — say, obtained through a corporate breach — is used to access multiple accounts by use of bots. The US saw more ATOs than the combined total of the next 9 countries — with nearly 1.43 million ATO logins per hour.
The US was again the leading country for the source of such attacks, considering that “most of the credential stuffing tools are developed there”. Credential stuffing has become a popular hacking method as people often use the same username or password or both for multiple accounts — be it social media or entertainment platforms. India had the dubious honour of being the 5th largest source country for ATO logins.
