Trai extends deadline, but Hathway’s paid channels go on blink in 8 lakh homes

HYDERABAD: Eight lakh subscribers in the city were in for a rude awakening on Wednesday when Hathway, a cable TV service operator, deactivated paid channels.
The reason cited was: consumers’ ‘failure’ to switch over to the new tariff regime. What caught subscribers off guard was Hathway’s swift action despite the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) extending the deadline for switchover — for the third time — to March 31.
In its defence, Hathway said a mere 2% of its subscribers had migrated to the new tariff regime, forcing its hand. “We have 8.20 lakh subscribers in Hyderabad, of which just 2% have shifted to the new regime.
