Reliance Jio doubles network capacity, can multiply users without additional investment

Mukesh Ambani-driven Reliance Jio has more than doubled its network capacity where its current capacity utilization is less than 20% even after adding 215 million customers to the network, Mukesh Ambani said at RIL’s 41st annual general meeting.

“Even after serving the needs of 215 million customers, our capacity utilization of network is less than 20% which means we can multiply our subscribers without any additional investment,” he mentioned.

The company is on track to achieve target of covering 99% population with 4G LTE. “Our network has wider coverage than any other network,” said Ambani.

According to Trai’s latest April report, Reliance Jio topped the chart of fastest 4G telecom operators with an average peak download speed of 19 megabit per second (mbps) on its network while Idea Cellular registered highest upload speed in April.

However, Trai has imposed penalties on Reliance Jio among other operators including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular, for failing to meet various Quality of Service benchmarks in the December quarter, according to PTI’s source.

RIL will also acquire Nasdaq-listed telecom solutions provider Radisys Corp. for about $75 million (Rs 510 crore) in cash, for a further push into Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G through its telecom arm, Reliance Jio.

Jio is also set to buy spectrum, fibre, towers and switching nodes from Reliance Communications for over Rs 17000 crore.
