People above 50 years discovering the delights of video-streaming services

Usha Pisharody, 56, never thought she would be watching Lust Stories at home. But then the schoolteacher from Thrissur in Kerala signed up on an over-the-top (OTT) platform last year. Now, sitting at home — with a bowl of popcorn or a bar of chikki in hand — she regularly watches movies and shows across languages and genres. The English teacher has even started referencing these shows in her lectures to connect better with her students.

“The other day, I asked a Class XII student what she was binge-watching these days. She hesitantly said she saw Lust Stories on Netflix the previous night. I asked which of the four stories she liked the most.” The student was pleasantly surprised, says Pisharody. Not only was her teacher active on an OTT platform — presumably the escape valve for the young and the restless — but she had also watched content one would not label as tailor-made for those 50 and above. Pisharody even encourages her retired colleagues to sign up for these platforms, as they give access to a vast variety of content.
