Nokia kicks off production of 5G ready base station from Chennai factory

Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia said that it has begun manufacturing of its 5G- ready multiband base station in India from its Chennai facility, and it will start shipping the product to some global customers by next week.

The Chennai factory, established in 2008, is Nokia’s biggest production unit, serving both domestic and global markets with nearly half of all radio base stations produced exported to global markets.

Monika Maurer, Nokia’s chief operating officer said that over 9 years the factory has helped telcos roll out new technologies faster

Maurer, who was one of the founders of Nokia’s research and development center in Chennai, said the company’s focus now is not only to further leverage the ecosystem in the chain, but to also transform the supply chain. “We are in the middle of transformation of our supply chain.”

“Supply chain 4.0 is much more than ecosystem environment. We are now moving full speed in the digital environment. It is not just about automation, but we are fully operating in an smart IoT environment,” she further added.

Nokia’s Chennai factory has doubled production in 2 years to 4 million base stations in 2017.

Maurer said that Nokia’s Chennai facility is taking benefits of a great ecosystem of partner and suppliers in the state to become a flagship on manufacturing unit. “The Chennai factory is connected with internal ecosystem of Nokia,” she further added.
