New Broadcasting Regime

The new regulatory framework for Broadcasting and Cable Services, being implemented by Trai, in haste, is resulting in complete chaos. Technologically unprepared local cable operators (LCOs) are at the mercy of operators, Multiple System Operators (MSOs). As a result, LCOs are losing customers to DTH players. An LCO operator who was in business for last 23 years in Assam’s Tezpur, committed suicide, and several others have threatened to do so. Users have complained of higher monthly payouts while many said they are facing blackouts as LCOs have expressed their inabilities to adjust to change in regime as per consumer choice.
