Huawei says awaiting approval from DoT for 5G trials

Chinese gear maker Huawei said that it is awaiting an approval from the telecom department for conducting 5G trials in the country, having made presentations before the authority in December last year.

Jay Chen, chief executive of Huawei India said that the response so far has been positive from the DoT. “We finished all presentations and are awaiting for the government approval,” he said.

Huawei had in December submitted joint applications with telcos for 5G trials.

The company, he said, is engaged with all telcos for 5G trials in the country.

Allaying security concerns, Chen said that the Chinese company is proactively approaching the government and all other authorities. “We have engagements with the DoT, PMO, IT department and other other departments… nobody has informed us about any security related issue. All say that we understand and it’s a political issue globally,” he added.

Chen again reiterated that Huawei is ready to put up its “source code” for screening and testing to allay security concerns.

ET previously reported that India was unlikely to ban Huawei from selling 5G equipment in the country, in a reversal of its earlier stance, despite the US calling for a boycott over espionage concerns.

“We understand the efforts of govt and DoT for 5G. However it is not only about 5G but about the ecosystem capabilities. India can’t afford to miss the 5G bus. We want to give the commitment and grow together in India with the industry,” he added.
