BharatNet, formerly known as NOFN (National Optical Fiber Network) under which about 250,000 Gram Panchayats (GPs) were to be connected with high speed data connectivity using optical fiber cables, was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Super Priority” project. He coined this term when he met the senior officers from the telecom ministry soon after taking over office in 2014.
