Artificial Intelligence, Cloud becoming key technologies: Akash Ambani

Cloud is becoming one of the key technologies to facilitate communications infrastructure, and Artificial Intelligence or AI is turning out to be one of the ace technologies, Reliance Jio Infocomm chief strategist Akash Ambani Friday said.

Akash Ambani, one of the two sons of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, was speaking at the India Digital Open Summit in Mumbai.

Along with broadband, one of the key technology enabling infrastructures is Cloud. India public cloud market is estimated to $2.6 billion in 2018 and to become over $4 billion by 2020,” Junior Ambani said, adding that with recent activities, AI was becoming a mainstream in human lives.

2017 was tipping point globally for Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality with accelerated momentum happening in 2018. AR/VR is still in the initial stages of adoption, but market will register a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 50% in the next five years, he added.

Company’s chief strategist also said that Jio was committed to contribute and use open source technologies to improve consumer experience.

On OpenStack, a world’s largest fully open source cloud project, he said, it is being leveraged for more projects with enterprises powering over 60 data centers public and private clouds around the world including Reliance Jio.

“Every day people when people use a LYF device, JioPhone or Jio application – their lives are enriched through the technologies enabled with open source,” junior Ambani said, adding that 2017 was truly the year of blockchain and digital currency.

Mumbai-based Jio, according to a recent report, also plans to create its own cyptocurrency called JioCoin, and had aggressive plans to work on blockchain products.

Broadband aligned with leading and emerging technology platforms, according to him, could address country’s needs as well as help in becoming the innovation center to serve Indians.

Jio, after its disruptive foray in September 2016 on the back of freebies, is aligning its operational strategy in sync with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s prestigious Digital India program, and putting its efforts towards next generation of technologies, primarily 5G.

“We are moving towards an era from 3G to 4G to 5G, telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan said, adding that 5G or fifth-generation technology would be a perfect opportunity to embrace open source.

“India today can truly say it has the capabilities to emerge as a digital leader globally,” the top government official added.

The Department of Telecom (DoT), had earlier formed a high-level committee to prepare a roadmap for 5G rollout in India in tandem with developments worldwide.

“India has witnessed the launch of Jio and has become the fastest Greenfield operator to acquire more than 100 million customers in 6 months,” Jio president Mathew Oommen said.

Oommen believes that 5G technology was poised to radically transform the telecom sector in India, offering an array of capabilities.

Between the US that focuses on industrialization and China that relies on manufacturing, in every connected ecosystem, India has a unique opportunity to not just be a leader but also create technology and digital platforms for the entire world, the Jio executive earlier said.
